Everybody knows Cannonball Run (1981, starring Burt Reynolds). Some people know Cannonball (1976, starring David 'Kung Fu' Carradine). But somehow, the Gumball Rally never quite made it to a bigger audience. It's actually a very well made movie with some excellent acting and a delicate balance between humor and action.
Just like Cannonball Run, the movie is about an illegal coast-to-coast race and rivalry. It is a brilliant example of typecasting, for both actors and cars. Bizarre, but more believable than the others. And certainly more fun.
The main story is about two rivals in a Ferrari and a Cobra The Ferrari guy is jealous and spends a fortune on hiring a formula 1 racing team to win the race with him. The hired italian driver is Franco (star performance of Raoul Julia), a brilliant driver with one weakness: beautiful women.
Go and check this if you like cars or the seventies. Or both.
